English and Swahili are official languages, and English is the main working language for government, approvals, and formal research documents. For national respondent coverage, Luganda is important but not sufficient, with Runyankole-Rukiga, Runyoro-Rutooro, Lusoga, Ateso, Luo languages, and others needed by region. Translation should support oral interviewing and check closely related language varieties during back-translation.

Kampala and the wider central region carry the largest urban concentration, with Wakiso, Mukono, Mbarara, Gulu, Jinja, Mbale, and Arua anchoring major regional samples. Uganda remains substantially rural, with dense settlement around Lake Victoria and highland or agricultural zones. National samples need regional and urban-rural strata, while targeted studies can focus on Kampala metro, refugee-hosting districts, or corridor towns.

Mobile phones support phone surveys across much of the country, while online surveys best fit Kampala, universities, professionals, and younger connected respondents. Face-to-face work should plan around rains, road conditions, local council introductions, and access rules for refugee settlements or institutions. Health, academic, and public-sector studies commonly require national ethics approval and district permissions, with collection often taking three to six weeks.
