English is the official language and the working language for federal institutions, regulators, and many business respondents. For national coverage, instruments usually need Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Nigerian Pidgin, with other languages added for state-level work. Translation and back-translation should handle regional wording, tone, and oral delivery, especially where respondents mix English, Pidgin, and local languages.

Nigeria has a large urban population but still includes extensive rural settlement across every zone. Lagos, Kano, Ibadan, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Onitsha-linked markets shape many commercial samples, while the north-west, south-west, and south-east carry dense population corridors. National samples need geopolitical-zone and state stratification, with careful urban, peri-urban, and rural allocation.

Mobile reach supports phone surveys across much of the country, while online surveys work best for urban, younger, salaried, and higher-income groups. Face-to-face work must plan around traffic, rains, fuel costs, and security constraints in some northern, central, and riverine areas. Public health, academic, or government-linked studies commonly need ethics approval, state permissions, and two to six weeks of collection.
