Portuguese is the official language and the working language of government, education and written instruments, but national interviewing needs major local languages by province. Emakhuwa, Xichangana, Elomwe, Sena, Ndau and others may be required. Translation should be planned regionally, with back-translation checking whether Portuguese service and governance terms work in oral local-language delivery.

Maputo and Matola dominate the south, with Beira, Nampula and Tete serving important regional populations. Many people live in rural districts spread along the coast, Zambezi valley, northern provinces and inland corridors. National samples need province, urban-rural and language-zone strata; targeted work should define corridor, port, agriculture, extractive or humanitarian areas.

Mobile phones support phone surveys in many populated areas, while online surveys mainly reach urban and higher-income respondents. Face-to-face work must plan around rainy seasons, cyclones, road and bridge disruptions, and security constraints in parts of Cabo Delgado. Public, health or NGO studies commonly need ministry, ethics or local approvals. Fieldwork often takes three to six weeks.
