Kirundi gives the broadest respondent coverage and should be central to national instruments. French and English are official languages used in government, donors and some technical settings, but everyday interviewing is mainly Kirundi. Back-translation should check terms through Kirundi speakers from different provinces and avoid assuming French comprehension outside formal settings.

Burundi is densely settled with a large rural population spread across hillsides and communes. Bujumbura is the largest city, while Gitega and Ngozi are important inland centers. National samples need province, commune and rural hill coverage rather than only urban clusters. Targeted studies should account for altitude, livelihood zone and access from provincial roads.

Mobile phones are widely used for contact, but internet surveys mainly reach urban and educated respondents. Face-to-face work must plan around rainy-season travel, steep terrain and local administrative approvals at province and commune level. Health or development studies commonly need national ethics or ministry clearance. Data collection often needs about three to five weeks.
