English, Shona, and Ndebele are central for national work, with English used for government, formal approvals, and business communication. Shona varieties cover much of the population, while Ndebele is important in the west, and minority languages matter for some districts. Translation should consider dialect differences, oral delivery, and back-translation by reviewers who know local rather than only school forms.

Harare and Bulawayo are the main urban anchors, with Chitungwiza, Mutare, Gweru, Kwekwe, and Masvingo important for broader coverage. A large rural population remains spread across communal, farming, mining, and border districts. National samples need province, urban-rural, and livelihood stratification, while targeted studies can focus on Harare metro, Matabeleland, mining corridors, or rural agricultural zones.

Mobile phones are widely used for calls and messaging, but internet affordability and reliability make online surveys more suitable for urban and professional groups. Face-to-face work should plan around fuel availability, rains, road conditions, institutional gatekeepers, and permissions in schools or clinics. Health, academic, and public-sector studies commonly require ethics approval and ministry or district clearance, with collection often taking three to five weeks.
