English is the official language and the working language for government, education, and formal approvals. National respondent coverage often needs Bemba, Nyanja, Tonga, Lozi, Kaonde, Lunda, and Luvale, selected by province and sample. Translation should reflect common spoken forms rather than only formal orthography, and back-translation should use reviewers familiar with Copperbelt, Lusaka, and rural provincial usage.

Zambia is moderately urbanized, with Lusaka and the Copperbelt cities such as Ndola, Kitwe, Chingola, and Mufulira carrying large urban shares. Other important centers include Livingstone, Kabwe, Chipata, and Solwezi, while rural communities are dispersed across large provinces. National samples need province and urban-rural strata, while targeted studies often separate Lusaka, Copperbelt mining towns, and rural agricultural areas.

Mobile reach supports phone surveys in towns and many rural districts, while online methods are strongest among urban, educated, and formal-sector respondents. Face-to-face work must plan around rains, long road travel, mining-town access, and local authority entry. Health, academic, conservation, and government studies commonly require ethics approval, ministry letters, or district permissions, with fieldwork often planned for three to five weeks.
