Arabic is the main official and working language for government and most public communication, with English used in some professional, academic, and international settings. National instruments may need Sudanese Arabic plus local languages such as Nubian, Beja, Fur, Masalit, Nuba languages, or others by region. Translation should handle spoken Arabic varieties and scripts, with back-translation grounded in target-state usage.

Khartoum has historically been the dominant urban center, with Omdurman, Port Sudan, Kassala, El Obeid, Nyala, and other state capitals important for regional coverage. Large rural populations live across riverine, pastoral, farming, and displaced settings. National samples need state-level planning and conflict-aware accessibility assumptions, while targeted studies should define whether they cover urban residents, displaced people, or stable rural communities.

Mobile phones support some phone research, but network reliability, power, and internet access vary sharply by location and current conditions. Face-to-face work is constrained by conflict, curfews, permits, heat, rains, and road or fuel availability. Public, health, academic, or humanitarian studies commonly need ethics review, authority letters, and partner-led timing, with data collection windows kept flexible rather than fixed.
