Somali and Arabic are official languages, with Somali essential for nearly all public-facing instruments and Arabic useful for some official, religious, and education contexts. English is also common among officials, NGOs, and diaspora-linked professionals. Translation should account for Somali dialect differences, Latin script use, and oral administration, with back-translation checked by reviewers familiar with the target region.

Mogadishu is the largest city and a major sampling hub, with Hargeisa, Bosaso, Kismayo, Baidoa, and Garowe important depending on the study area and administrative scope. The population includes urban, rural, pastoralist, and displaced communities. National-style samples need clear territorial definitions and clan-sensitive routing, while targeted samples should separate city residents, camps, pastoral corridors, and regional administrations.

Mobile money and phone access are widely used, making phone surveys practical where lists and consent protocols are strong, while online surveys mainly reach urban, educated, and diaspora-connected groups. Face-to-face work is affected by security, checkpoints, drought, floods, and local permissions. NGO, health, or public studies commonly need ethics review, authority letters, and partner-led field windows of several weeks.
