French is the official language and the working language for government, permits, and many formal interviews. For national public research, Wolof is essential, with Pulaar, Serer, Mandinka, Jola, and Soninke added by region and sample. Translation should be tested for oral delivery, since many respondents understand French less comfortably than local languages, and back-translation needs local language reviewers.

Senegal has a strong urban corridor around Dakar, Pikine, Guediawaye, and Rufisque, with important secondary coverage in Thies, Touba, Saint-Louis, Kaolack, and Ziguinchor. Rural populations remain significant across groundnut, river valley, and Casamance areas. National samples need Dakar weighting control and regional rural allocation, while targeted studies often separate Dakar metro from religious, agricultural, and border regions.

Mobile phone reach is strong for phone surveys, while online methods work best in Dakar, universities, and formal employment segments. Face-to-face work should plan around rains, travel to Casamance, religious calendars, and permissions from local authorities. Public health, education, and development studies commonly need ethics clearance or ministry letters, with typical data collection windows of two to five weeks.
