French is widely used in administration and formal research materials, while Bambara is the most important lingua franca for respondent interviewing. Fulfulde, Songhay, Tamasheq, Soninke and other languages matter by region. Translation should be oral-tested, with back-translation checking how official French terms are understood across Mande, Sahelian and northern language zones.

Bamako is the largest city and main urban concentration, while Sikasso, Segou, Mopti, Kayes and Gao anchor regions. A large rural population is spread across agricultural south, Niger River towns, Sahelian areas and the sparsely populated north. National samples need region, livelihood and security-access strata; targeted studies should define feasible zones carefully.

Mobile phone surveys can work in many populated areas, but online surveys mainly reach Bamako and other connected towns. Face-to-face work is constrained by rainy-season roads, long distances and serious insecurity in central and northern regions. Public or health studies commonly need ministry and ethics approvals. Fieldwork often needs three to six weeks, with access contingency.
