Arabic and French are official languages, with French often used in administration and Arabic important in public life. Somali and Afar are essential for respondent coverage and should guide interviewer assignment outside formal settings. Translation should distinguish Modern Standard Arabic, local Arabic usage and Somali or Afar oral delivery, with back-translation by community speakers.

Djibouti City contains most of the population and economic activity, while Ali Sabieh, Tadjourah, Dikhil and Obock serve smaller regional populations. Rural and nomadic communities are dispersed across arid areas. National samples usually need a large capital-city stratum and separate regional or pastoral coverage; targeted work should define port, refugee, corridor or community segments.

Mobile access is strongest in Djibouti City and main corridors, while online surveys are limited outside connected urban groups. Face-to-face work must plan for heat, remote travel, Ramadan timing and local authority coordination. Studies with refugees, health topics or public institutions usually need formal permissions and ethics review. Fieldwork often takes two to four weeks.
